Top 7 Home Hair Loss Treatments in Ayurveda

Two months back a Swiggy delivery boy walked into our Actvebody store in Mumbai, to pick up an order. While picking up the order, he curiously asked, “My wife is suffering from extreme hair fall. Is there a Hair Loss Treatment in Ayurveda?”

We often receive the same question from businessmen, housewives, and even youth - both boys and girls, however, it was the first time a delivery boy had asked this question.

Setting that aside, we all know hair loss or poor hair quality is becoming a major problem for millions of Indians. Loss of hair doesn’t just make you feel inferior about your looks but contributes to low self-esteem and even depression!

Customers spend thousands of rupees on expensive hair treatments, even after knowing that not all of them guarantee foolproof treatment or the fact that these treatments increase exposure to harmful chemicals.

So is there a better alternative?

Yes, there are many easy hair loss Ayurveda treatments that can be performed at home. Most of these can be done at your home, with affordable ingredients that are widely available near you.

Let’s discuss them.

Ayurveda and Hair

Customers often ask us - ‘Which Ayurvedic medicine (herbs) is best for hair growth?’

We know even you have this question and before we answer it, it's important to understand the science behind Ayurveda.

The Ayurvedic medicinal system says that our body is made of 5 elements - Air, Water, Earth, Fire and Ether, and three doshas (constitutions) - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. A balance in all three Doshas ensures we stay healthy, and any imbalances result in illnesses.

Simply put, Kapha relates to water, Pitta to fire and Vata to air. As per Ayurveda, Kapha is responsible for lubricating our joints, Pitta for digestion and Vata for the functioning of our nervous system. Usually, all of us have one or two dominant doshas.

For a healthy body and mind, these elements and doshas need to be in balance. An imbalance in these elements causes illnesses, including hair loss. Lifestyle changes and following Dosha pacifying diet can prevent diseases.

Ayurveda and Lifestyle Basics

Ayurveda propagates that all diseases originate in the mind. What it means is the imbalance in doshas is caused by an imbalance in our emotions, thoughts and overall mental state. Even medical science has started believing this because several studies have attributed stress, weight loss, smoking and drinking alcohol to hair loss.

Taking measures for mental well-being is necessarily the first step towards being healthy. Following a disciplined lifestyle - waking up early, sleeping on time, eating dosha pacifying diet, doing yoga, eating meals on time, meditation and so on, is what can help you achieve a disease-free body and mind.

The belief is that through the right lifestyle practices, we can keep our body in sync with the natural rhythm, consequently preventing diseases. Everything in the world has a rhythm or cycle, even our body has one!

Now let’s talk about certain easy-to-do home remedies for hair loss treatment by ayurvedic herbs. We have also shared how you can apply each of them to your hair and scalp.

7 Hair Loss Ayurveda Treatments

  1. Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

Amla is considered a natural immunity booster and is also one of the Ayurvedic remedies for hair loss. Amla contains fatty acids that strengthen the hair follicle, making the hair glossy and endurable. High Vitamin C in Amla prevents premature greying of hair and antioxidant contents increase blood circulation. It also reduces dandruff and itching.

How to apply Amla - Make a paste by mixing Amla powder with a small cup of lime juice. Apply the paste and massage your scalp and hair. Cover your head with a shower cap to keep the paste from drying out early. After an hour, rinse out the paste with water.

  1. Bhringraj (False Daisy)

Massaging Bhringraj oil promotes healthy hair growth and better scalp health. Hair experts and beauticians are increasingly advocating applying Bhringraj oil. Bhringraj contains magnesium, calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin E. Applying Bhringraj oil increases blood circulation and also cools down your head. This reduces hair loss caused by stress.

How to apply Bhringraj - Take a few Bhringraj leaves and dry them in the sun. After they dry out, take the leaves and keep them in a jar of coconut oil. Let the jar stay for 2 - 3 days. Once the oil colour changes to green, apply the same on your scalp. For best results, it is recommended to keep the oil overnight.

Alternatively, you can buy natural Bhringraj oil here.

  1. Mustard Oil

Mustard oil, commonly known as ‘Sarson Ka tel’ is widely used to relieve muscular pain in India. It is also used for hair loss treatment in Ayurveda because it contains natural fats. This makes it a great natural hair conditioner because applying mustard oil makes your hair smooth, silky and soft. It also prevents split ends, hair breakage and dry scalp. Moreover, mustard oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that may help reduce dandruff and acne.

How to apply Mustard Oil - Mustard oil can be applied in many ways - with yogurt, aloe vera or lemon juice pack. You can also use it as a standalone hair oil by gently massaging with your hands. Let it stay for 30 minutes and then wash with a conditioner and shampoo.

  1. Neem

Another common hair loss Ayurveda treatment is by using Neem. Applying Neem has a cooling effect on the head and promotes hair growth. Neem also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that control hair loss and dandruff.

How to apply Neem - Crush Neem leaves to make a thick paste. Add some warm water to the paste and apply it to your hair. Cover your hair with a towel and let the paste sit. After one hour remove the towel and gently shampoo your hair. Neem will help you get healthy hair.

  1. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can cure several problems like oily scalps. First of all, its anti-inflammatory properties reduce scalp irritation. Secondly, it contains proteolytic enzymes that repair damaged cells and keep the hair follicle healthy.

How to apply Aloe Vera - Extract pulp from the Aloe Vera stalk. Apply the pulp on your hair and let it stay for an hour, then rinse softly with water. Doing this 3 to 4 times a week will promote hair growth.

  1. Shikakai

Shikakai has rich amounts of Vitamins and antioxidants. This is often considered a natural shampoo due to its hair cleansing properties. Shikakai moisturizes the hair strands and nourishes them.

How to apply Shikakai- Take Shikakai pods and dry them out in the sun for a few days. Grind the pods in a mixer and add 2 tablespoons of the powder to a jar of coconut oil. Keep the jar in a shaded and cool area for 15 to 20 days. Shake the container and apply the mixture to your scalp.

You can also use a shampoo that contains Shikakai because it's difficult to get Shikakai in its natural form.

  1. Sesame Oil

Sesame oil has hair darkening properties which keep the hair looking natural. Sesame oil has antioxidants that fight chemicals that promote greying of hair. Applying sesame oil on your scalp further improves blood circulation and prevents hair loss.

How to apply Sesame Oil - Warm the oil and gently apply and massage on your hair and scalp. Leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. Do this 1 to 2 times a week for best results.

In addition to the above hair loss treatments by ayurvedic herbs, there are several therapeutic treatments like Shirodhara and Shiro Abhyanga that you can take.
